Scottsdale Canal Development has proposed a plan to relocate what many have considered an eyesore for many years...a Salt River Project electrical substation. The substation is currently located within the very high-profile and iconic location of Scottsdale Road and Camelback Road.
Scottsdale Canal Development is privately funding $20+ million dollars to improve and update the 50yr old substation, bury underground KV lines; making the area more aesthetically appealing and providing the land for the new location.
Doug Syndor of Douglas Sydnor Architect and Associates, Inc. is the award winning architect commissioned, to creatively design a façade that seamlessly blends with the surrounding area; ultimately providing amazing improvements for the entire community; a part of the Downtown area many refer to as "The Arts District".
The proposed substation design includes 24-foot, internally lit "vertical lanterns" on both the northeast and southeast corners of the intersection of 68th Street & Indian School Road, shaded seating area, beautiful water-features and a 12-foot "sculpted art wall" completely camouflaging the substation. In addition; plans include an educational or interpretive component related to the history of the canals, with a focus on the historic downtown Scottsdale.

This as a reflection of the creativity of a city, to continue to make lemonade out of lemons; just as they've done with their artistic bus stops, the canal thats developed into prime real estate for luxury living, art bridges that have created walk-able connections within the area, and many other innovative improvements.

To install these 69 KV lines, SRP will install approximately 70 feet riser polls above highly-profiled intersections and streets such as Scottsdale Road and Camelback Road and dig up the recently improved and landscaped canal banks (taxpayer funded), installing underground lines in 5ft. x 12ft. trenches. Horst Schulze is a legend and a leader in the service world. His vision has helped reshape concepts of customer service throughout the hospitality and service industries.
In 1991, Mr. Schulze was recognized as “corporate hotelier of the world” by HOTELS Magazine. In 1995, he was awarded the Ishikawa Medal for his personal contributions to the quality movement. In 1999, Johnson & Wales University recognized him with an honorary Doctor of Business Administration degree in Hospitality Management.
Mr. Schulze served as vice chairman of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company from 2001-02, after serving as president and COO of The Ritz-Carlton Group, starting in 1988. Under his leadership, the Group was awarded the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in both 1992 and 1999; the first and only hotel company to win even one such award. In addition, Ritz-Carlton was continuously voted “best hotel company in the world” by convention and trade publications.
After joining The Ritz-Carlton as a charter member and VP of Operations in 1983, Mr. Schulze was instrumental in creating the operating and service standards that have become world famous. He was appointed EVP in 1987, and president and COO in 1988. When he left The Ritz-Carlton to form the West Paces Hotel Group, Mr. Schulze was responsible for the $2 billion Ritz-Carlton operations worldwide.
Prior to his service at The Ritz-Carlton, Mr. Schulze spent nine years with Hyatt Hotels Corporation, where he was a hotel GM, regional VP and corporate VP. Before his association with Hyatt, he worked for Hilton Hotels.
Mr. Schulze serves on the boards of Reliance Trust Company, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, The Travel Institute, Georgia Family Council, and The InfiLaw System.]]>
